Unable to bear the public disgrace father deserts the family, and the sons are raised by their mother(Nirupa Roy)who brings them to Bombay City, who suffers the trials and tribulations of a poor single mother. Vijay Verma, the elder brother, grows up with an acute awareness of his father's humiliation and is victimized for his father's supposed misdeeds. In the process of fighting for his rights Vijay, who starts out as a boot polisher and becomes a dockyard worker in his youth, becomes a smuggler and a leading figure of the underworld.
Did you know?
- The Mother's role was almost offered to Waheeda Rehman, but Yash Chopra had already cast her in Kabhi Kabhie - Love Is Life as Amitabh Bachchan's wife. He was worried that if Kabhi Kabhie - Love Is Life released first, the public may not accept her as Amitabh Bachchan's mother. Then Vyjayanthimala was approached, but she turned it down. Finally it was offered to Nirupa Roy.
- Amitabh Bachchan's role was loosely based on famous Bombay smuggler Haji Mastan.
- Salim-Javed were demanding 8 lakh rupees after the success of the movie. This sum was unheard of in Bollywood then.
- Gulshan Rai read the movies script twice, and both the times he got so emotional that tears burst from his eyes.
- Amitabh Bachchan shot Sholay and 'Deewaar' simultaneously. Since most of his scenes feature him indoors or during the dark, he used to shoot 'Sholay' in the morning and 'Deewaar' during the night.
- Shashi Kapoor, who plays Amitabh Bachchan's younger brother in this movie is actually four years older than him.
- For the role of Vijay Verma , Yash Chopra wanted Rajesh Khanna, but Salim Javed after having had misunderstanding with Khanna were adamant on being the role given to Amitabh.
- Navin Nischol was the first choice for the role of Ravi Verma and Vyjanthimala was to play the mother's role. Both declined this film's offer when they learnt Rajesh Khanna was not doing Vijay Verma's role.
- The dialogs for the death scene of Amitabh Bachchan were never written, Yash Chopra gave AB the leeway to speak what came to his mind.
