Story

Nasik-based Heerendra Dhaan (Ajay Devgan) and Raj Ranade (Prashant Raj Sachdev) are bodyguards of a politician but, after their employer is implicated in a scam, they end up assaulting a police officer and flee to Mumbai. Once there they meet with Rambhabhai (Rajpal Yadav), who in turn, gets them employed with a gangster named Shambhu. After a short while the duo are apprehended by Police Inspector Narsimha, questioned, and after they agree to cooperate to bring down Shambhu, are let go. The two succeed in assisting the police arrest Shambhu, but they themselves are arrested, tried in Court, and sentenced to a year in jail.

After their discharge they are met by Inspector Narsimha (Mohanlal), who wants to recruit them to capture and kill dreaded bandit Babban Singh (Amitabh Bachchan), who had slaughtered his wife, Kavita (Suchitra Krishnamoorthi), and son, Subbu (J.D. Chakravarthy), as well as cut his fingers off. Heerendra and Raj agree to carry out this task for 8 Lakh Rupees. They re-locate to Kaliganj where Heerendra falls in love with auto-rickshaw driver, Ghungroo (Priyanka Kothari), while Raj gives his heart to Subbu's widow, Durga (Sushmita Sen). They then set out to capture Babban and meet with some success during Diwali, but Babban manages to escape. Babban then starts to ambush and kill Kaliganj residents to compel them to surrender the duo to him. The question remains will the residents carry out Babban's wishes or will they permit themselves to be slaughtered?

Did you know?
  1. The movie's working title is "Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay"
  2. Katrina Kaif was signed first for the role of Radha. However, upon writing the script, Ram Gopal Varma rewrote the role of Radha into a deviation named Devi. Katrina felt she was unable to act the role, and Ram Gopal Varma felt that Sushmita Sen fit the role better.
  3. Abhishek Bachchan was attached to play the role of "Veeru", but dropped out and the role went to Ajay Devgn. Abhishek is now playing the Gypsy Singer during the Mehbooba song.
  4. It took 50 trials before Amitabh Bachchan decided upon a light brown colored soft contact lens for the left eye and blue for the right (applied each morning by his family's eye surgeon, Dr Himanshu Mehta).
  5. Although Ram Gopal Varma faced criticism from many of the cast and crew of the original Sholay (Ramesh Sippy, Jaya Bhaduri, Dharmendra and Hema Malini), he had the support of Amitabh Bachchan, who was fulfilling a long-held dream to play Gabbar Singh.
  6. Priyanka Kothari, like her character Ghungroo, is a fan of Rajnikanth.
  7. During the song "Mehbooba Mehbooba," Babban (Amitabh Bachchan) is heard reciting verse from the romance Kabhi Kabhie - Love Is Life, which Bachchan starred in.
  8. When the movie was announced several actors showed interest in playing Thakur. Dharmendra, Anupam Kher were some of them but it was Ram Gopal Varma's decision to cast Mohanlal as the new Thakur "Narishma".
