Story
Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich businessman, living in New Delhi with his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) and his two sons, Rahul and Rohan. The elder son, Rahul is adopted whilst Rohan is their biological son. As a result, Rahul feels indebted to his parents when he finds out (at the age of eight) about his adoption. As an adult, Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) falls in love with Anjali Sharma (Kajol), a girl belonging to a lower social standing than him, against the wishes of Yash, who wants him to marry Naina Kapoor (Rani Mukerji). Rahul, however, marries the recently orphaned Anjali, as she now has no one, following which Yash disowns Rahul as his son. Disheartened, Rahul leaves for London with his wife and her sister Pooja. As well, Nandini sends Sayeeda (Farida Jalal), Rahul and Rohan's nanny, after Rahul to take care of him. Meanwhile, Rohan is sent to a boarding school, as per family tradition.
Ten years later, a grown-up Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) finds out the truth about Rahul's disappearance. He asks his parents to let him go to London to attend graduate school; but he does so in order to conspire with Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) to bring his brother back home. Pooja informs Rahul that Rohan is her friend's cousin who has shifted from India to London to pursue his studies and needs a place to stay. Rahul reluctantly agrees to let him live with them. When Rahul eventually finds out about Rohan's identity, Rohan begs of him to return home. Rahul refuses, as he believes that Yash does not love him. Pooja, however, believes that Rahul will go back home, so she encourages Rohan to invite his parents over to London and arrange for them to meet Rahul. Once in London, Nandini and Rahul share a happy reunion, but Rahul refuses to talk to his father. Meanwhile, Yash finds out about the conspiracy and is furious with Rohan. He and Nandini, however, return to India due to the sudden death of his mother (Achala Sachdev).
Rahul, who also joins Yash and Rohan during the funeral service, agrees to return home for one visit to meet his mother, on the insistence of Rohan and Pooja. Once there, Yash expresses his guilt for disowning his elder son, and adds that Rahul was foolish enough for believing that his father did not love him. The film ends with an elaborate wedding ceremony of Rohan and Pooja, in which the entire family participates.
Did you know?
- When Hrithik Roshan watched Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan play the reconciliation scene he was so impressed and intimidated by the acting that he was unable to complete his own shot. He had to do it the next day after Amitabh had calmed him down and reassured him that everything would be fine.
- It was one of the first Indian films that had a making-of book written for it.
- Most expensive Indian film released so far (December 2001).
- The song "It's Raining Men" was used without permission from the right holders. The director was sued in an UK court and was sentenced to pay.
- The logo that appears on the helicopters in the movie is actually the logo for Yash Raj films but in the movie it was intended to be the logo of Yash Raichand's company.
- This film bears some similarities with the director's previous film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: - The two pivotal lovers in both films are named Rahul and Anjali Sharma and are once again played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol respectively. - The first half of the film is told mainly in flashback structure ending in a character vowing to bring other characters together. - During a playful argument between Rahul and Anjali, Rahul snaps 'I don't like jokes' with Anjali replying 'I don't like you' in a mock voice. - "Suraj Hua Madham" contains a small melody from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. - Rani Mukerji makes a small but important appearance in this movie, once again coming between the two lovers in the movie. - When Naina tells Rahul to follow his love, the theme song for Tina (Rani's character from KKHH) plays.
- Abhishek Bachchan had done shooting for a cameo role, but later he asked the director to remove his scene from the final copy of the movie.
- Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was considered for a part in the movie.
- Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri dance to famous song "Aati Kya Khandala." The song is from Rani Mukerji's first hit film, Ghulam.
- Waheeda Rehman was initially cast as Amitabh Bachchan's mother, and she even filmed some scenes. However, her husband passed away during the making and she dropped out.
- Before making it big, John Abraham was offered the small role of Robbie, but he declined. He would later play the lead role in two Karan Johar productions, Kaal and Dostana respectively.
- The character of Yashvardhan 'Yash' Raichand is modeled after the father of Karan Johar, the director of the movie, Yash Johar, who is also the producer of the film. The birth date of Yash Raichand that is mentioned in the movie is the same as Yash Johar's birth date.
- Parzan Dastur, who plays Ashfaque's nephew in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham also played Silent Sardarji in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. In Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, during Rukhsar's wedding, he is seen counting stars, the same thing he does in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
